How to Get Around Da Nang: Grab, Taxi, Motorbike & More

How to Get Around Da Nang: Grab, Taxi, Motorbike & More

Get around Da Nang easily with Grab, taxis, motorbikes, private cars, buses, and several other convenient transport options. The best way to travel depends on where you’re going, your budget, who you’re traveling with, and how comfortable you are with Vietnamese traffic. In this guide, we’ll explain the main ways to get around Da Nang, when to use each one, and practical local tips to make transportation simple and stress-free.

1. Grab – The Easiest Way to Get Around Da Nang

For most international travelers, Grab is one of the easiest ways to get around Da Nang. Enter your destination in the app, see the fare before booking, and follow the driver’s location without needing to negotiate the price or explain the address in Vietnamese.

GrabCar or GrabBike?

GrabCar is the better option for couples, families, travelers with luggage, rainy days, or whenever you want air conditioning and more comfort. It’s particularly convenient for trips between My Khe Beach, An Thuong, the city center, Han River, airport, and other areas around Da Nang.

GrabBike is cheaper and often quicker for solo travelers making short trips. However, if you’re uncomfortable on motorbikes or traffic is unfamiliar to you, there’s no reason to choose it simply to save a little money.

Our Local Tip

Always check the driver’s name, vehicle, and license plate in the app before getting in. At busy places such as the airport or tourist attractions, don’t automatically follow someone who approaches you claiming to be your driver.

Prices can also change depending on demand, weather, and time of day. If the fare seems unusually high, you can compare it with another service such as Xanh SM or wait and check again later if your journey isn’t urgent.

2. Xanh SM – A Comfortable Alternative to Grab

Xanh SM is another convenient way to get around Da Nang, particularly if you prefer traveling by electric car. You can book through the app, enter your destination in advance, and see the trip information and fare without needing to negotiate directly with a driver.

For most everyday journeys around Da Nang, Xanh SM and Grab serve a similar purpose. Having both apps gives you another option when cars are limited, waiting times are longer, or you simply want to compare fares.

Do You Need Both Grab and Xanh SM?

Not necessarily. If Grab works well throughout your stay, you can comfortably use it for most city journeys.

However, having Xanh SM as a second option can be useful, especially during busy periods, rainy weather, or when demand increases and prices or waiting times change.

Our Local Tip

You don’t need to download every ride-hailing app available in Vietnam. Grab plus Xanh SM is already enough for most travelers in Da Nang, and traditional taxis remain readily available when you don’t want to use an app.

Whichever service you choose, confirm the vehicle and license plate before getting in and use the official app or authorized pickup point whenever possible.

3. Traditional Taxis – Use Them as a Backup Option

Traditional taxis are widely available in Da Nang, but for international travelers, we’d generally recommend trying Grab or Xanh SM first. With ride-hailing apps, you can see the estimated fare, vehicle information, and route before the journey, which makes the process much clearer when you’re unfamiliar with local prices.

Traditional taxis can still be useful when you can’t find a Grab or Xanh SM, your internet isn’t working, or you simply need a car immediately.

Agree on the Fare Before You Go

If the driver isn’t using a meter or offers you a fixed price, ask exactly how much the journey will cost and agree on the total before getting into the car. Don’t accept an unclear answer such as “cheap price” or “we’ll see when we arrive.”

You can quickly check the same route on Grab or Xanh SM beforehand to get a rough idea of what a reasonable fare should look like.

Follow Your Route on Google Maps

Keep Google Maps open during the journey, particularly when you’re unfamiliar with Da Nang. This helps you understand where you’re going and notice if the vehicle appears to be taking an unnecessarily long route.

However, don’t assume every different route means you’re being overcharged – traffic, road closures, one-way streets, and temporary restrictions can require drivers to take another route.

Our Local Tip

As with taxis in any unfamiliar destination, avoid handing over money before the journey unless you’re using an official prepaid taxi/transfer system that provides clear confirmation or a receipt. For a normal street taxi, agree on the fare or confirm the meter first, then pay the agreed amount when you arrive – paying an unknown driver upfront can leave you with less recourse if the ride doesn’t go as agreed.

If anything feels unclear, skip the car and book through Grab or Xanh SM instead. A visible fare, recorded booking, driver details, and route tracking make app-based services our preferred option for most visitors in Da Nang.

4. Renting a Motorbike – Best for Freedom, But Not for Everyone

If you’re an experienced rider, renting a motorbike gives you the most freedom to get around Da Nang. You can easily move between the beach, cafés, restaurants, local neighborhoods, markets, and attractions without waiting for a driver every time you want to go somewhere.

It’s especially convenient if you’re staying for several days and enjoy making spontaneous stops along the way. However, renting a motorbike shouldn’t be the default choice simply because it’s cheap and popular in Vietnam.

Don’t Learn to Ride in Da Nang

If you’ve never ridden a motorbike confidently before, Da Nang isn’t the place to learn just for your holiday. Traffic patterns may be very different from what you’re used to, and navigating intersections, busy roads, rain, and local driving habits takes experience.

Grab, Xanh SM, and taxis are inexpensive and convenient enough that you don’t need to take unnecessary risks just to have more independence.

Check Your License and Insurance

Before renting, make sure your driving licence is legally valid for riding the relevant vehicle in Vietnam and check the requirements of your travel insurance. Don’t assume that having a motorbike licence or international driving permit from your home country automatically means you’re covered in Vietnam.

Also inspect the motorbike before leaving the rental shop, photograph any existing damage, test the brakes and lights, and confirm the rental conditions and deposit.

Our Local Tip

Motorbikes are great for experienced riders exploring Da Nang independently, but switch to GrabCar or another car service during heavy rain or whenever you don’t feel confident with the conditions.

Be particularly careful with longer or mountainous routes such as Son Tra Peninsula and Hai Van Pass. Check current road access and weather conditions before going, wear a proper helmet, and don’t let the desire for a scenic ride override your actual riding experience.

5. Private Car – Best for Families, Groups and Longer Trips

A private car is one of the most comfortable ways to get around Da Nang when you’re traveling with family, elderly parents, children, or a larger group. Instead of booking a new Grab for every journey, you can arrange one vehicle for several stops or for the entire day.

It’s particularly useful when visiting attractions spread farther apart, traveling with luggage, or exploring outside central Da Nang. You also have air conditioning, space for your belongings, and more flexibility to stop or rest along the way.

When Does a Private Car Make More Sense Than Grab?

For a simple hotel-to-restaurant journey, Grab or Xanh SM is usually easier. But a private car becomes more practical when your day includes multiple attractions or longer routes, such as:

  • Son Tra Peninsula and Linh Ung Pagoda.
  • Hoi An.
  • Ba Na Hills.
  • My Son Sanctuary.
  • Hue.
  • Hai Van Pass.
  • Airport transfers with a larger group or lots of luggage.

Instead of arranging several separate rides and waiting for another driver at each location, your vehicle can stay with you according to the agreed itinerary.

Our Local Tip

Before automatically booking several Grab rides, compare the total convenience and cost with hiring a private car for a half or full day. The cheapest individual ride isn’t always the easiest option once you have several stops, waiting time, children, elderly parents, or luggage involved.

Dacotours can arrange private cars and vans with local drivers in Da Nang and across Central Vietnam. Tell us where you want to go, your group size, and how flexible you’d like the day to be, and we can help arrange a suitable route and vehicle.

6. Join a Tour – An Easy Option for Day Trips from Da Nang

For destinations outside the city, joining a tour can be more practical than arranging transportation yourself. Pickup, transportation, timing, and the sightseeing route are already organized, while a local guide helps you understand the places you’re visiting rather than simply dropping you at the entrance.

This works particularly well for popular day trips such as Ba Na Hills, Hoi An, My Son Sanctuary, Hue, and Cham Islands.

Group Tour or Private Tour?

A group tour is usually the more budget-friendly option, especially for solo travelers or couples. You share transportation and guide costs with other travelers while still having the main logistics arranged for you.

A private tour makes more sense when you’re traveling with family or friends, want a flexible schedule, need a slower pace, or prefer to customize the stops and activities.

Our Local Tip

Don’t book a tour simply because you think every destination outside Da Nang is difficult to reach independently. Hoi An, for example, is relatively easy to reach by car, while destinations such as Hue or My Son involve longer distances and can benefit much more from organized transportation and a guide.

The main advantage of a tour isn’t only getting from A to B. You also have someone local handling the route, timing, tickets where included, and explaining the history and culture behind what you’re seeing.

Dacotours offers both daily group tours and private tours from Da Nang. If you’re unsure whether a tour, private car, or independent trip makes more sense for a particular destination, contact our local team and we’ll help you compare the options.

7. Public Buses – Available, but Rarely Necessary for Most Travelers

Public buses are available in Da Nang, but they aren’t usually the first choice for getting around the city. Da Nang is relatively compact, most places aren’t particularly far from each other, and motorbikes are the main everyday transport for many local residents.

Even for us as locals, we rarely find ourselves needing to use the public bus within Da Nang. For international visitors, Grab, Xanh SM, taxis, or walking within the right areas are generally much simpler and more convenient.

When Might a Public Bus Be Useful?

Buses can still make sense if you’re traveling on a very tight budget, staying in Da Nang for a longer period, or happen to find a route that conveniently connects where you’re staying with where you want to go.

However, for a short holiday, the savings may not justify waiting for the bus, finding the correct stop, following the route, and then walking from the stop to your final destination.

Our Local Tip

Don’t feel like you need to learn Da Nang’s public transport system just because you normally use buses when traveling abroad. The city isn’t huge, most tourist areas are easily accessible, and distances between many places are relatively manageable by Grab or taxi.

If you do want to use a bus, check the current route, stops, schedule, and fare before leaving, as these can change. Otherwise, Grab or Xanh SM will usually be the more practical choice for most travelers visiting Da Nang for a few days.

8. Walking – Great Within the Right Areas

Walking can be a pleasant way to get around Da Nang for short distances, but the city isn’t designed for you to explore everything on foot. Attractions and neighborhoods are spread across both sides of the Han River, so combining walking with Grab or Xanh SM is usually the most practical approach.

Some of the easiest areas to explore on foot include An Thuong and My Khe Beach, where restaurants, cafés, bars, spas, shops, and the beachfront are relatively close together. The Han River and parts of the city center are also enjoyable for walking, particularly in the evening.

Distance Isn’t the Only Thing to Consider

A route that looks like an easy 15-20 minute walk on Google Maps may feel very different at midday in Da Nang. Heat, humidity, strong sunshine, rain, traffic, and road crossings can all make walking less comfortable than the distance suggests.

For longer journeys between neighborhoods or attractions, simply take a Grab or Xanh SM and continue exploring on foot once you arrive.

Our Local Tip

The best approach is to walk within an area rather than walk between every area. For example, take a Grab to An Thuong and explore the neighborhood on foot, or ride to the Han River and spend the evening walking along the riverside.

Early morning and evening are generally much more comfortable for walking than the middle of a hot day. If you enjoy exploring cities on foot, you can also read our Is Da Nang Walkable? guide for a more detailed breakdown of the best areas and practical walking tips.

9. Bicycle – Good for Short, Leisurely Rides

Cycling can be an enjoyable way to explore small parts of Da Nang at a slower pace, but we wouldn’t recommend using a bicycle as your main transportation around the city. Traffic, heat, longer distances, and busy main roads can make cycling less practical than it first appears.

A bicycle works better for leisurely rides along suitable beachfront areas, quieter neighborhoods, or simply exploring around your accommodation. Some hotels and homestays also provide bicycles or can help arrange rentals.

Better for Exploring Than Getting Somewhere Quickly

If your goal is simply to get from your hotel to an attraction across the city, Grab or Xanh SM will usually be much easier. Cycling makes more sense when the ride itself is part of the experience and you aren’t rushing to reach somewhere at a particular time.

If you enjoy cycling, nearby Hoi An and its countryside are also particularly suitable for relaxed cycling experiences through villages and rural areas.

Our Local Tip

Avoid cycling long distances during the strongest midday heat, and be cautious on busy roads if you’re unfamiliar with Vietnamese traffic. Early morning and late afternoon are generally much more comfortable for a casual ride.

For most visitors, we’d treat cycling as an enjoyable activity rather than essential Da Nang transportation – walk for nearby places, use Grab or Xanh SM for longer city journeys, and cycle when you actually want to enjoy the ride.

Best Transportation in Da Nang for Different Situations

There isn’t one best way to get around Da Nang for every traveler or every journey. In practice, you’ll probably combine several transportation options depending on what you’re doing that day.

Situation Recommended option
Da Nang Airport → hotel Grab, Xanh SM, taxi or pre-arranged transfer
Short trips around the city Grab or Xanh SM
Solo traveler, short distance GrabBike
An Thuong & My Khe area Walking + Grab
Han River & city center Walking + Grab
Exploring freely Motorbike if experienced and legally qualified
Family with children GrabCar or private car
Elderly travelers Private car or GrabCar
Larger groups Private van
Several attractions in one day Private car
Ba Na Hills Group tour or private car/tour
Hoi An Grab, private car or tour
My Son Sanctuary Tour or private car
Hue Group tour or private car/tour
Cham Islands Tour/organized transfer + boat
Budget/long-term travelers Public bus where the route is convenient
Leisurely local exploration Walking or bicycle

Our Local Tip

Don’t feel like you need to choose one type of transportation for your entire Da Nang trip. Walk around An Thuong in the morning, take a Grab to the city center, hire a private car for several attractions the next day, and join a group tour when traveling farther outside the city.

For most first-time visitors, the simplest combination is walking + Grab/Xanh SM for everyday travel, then tours or private transportation for longer day trips. It’s easy, flexible, and saves you from spending unnecessary time figuring out transportation when you could be enjoying Da Nang instead.
