Should I Stay in Da Nang or Hoi An? A Local Guide for First-Time Visitors

Should I stay in Da Nang or Hoi An? It’s one of the most common questions travelers ask when planning a trip to Central Vietnam, and the honest answer is that there’s no one-size-fits-all choice. The best place to stay depends on your travel style, priorities, and how you want to experience the region, not simply which destination is more popular. In this guide, we go beyond the usual comparisons to help you make the right decision with practical local insights rather than generic travel advice.

Drawing on more than 13 years of helping travelers explore Central Vietnam, the Dacotours team shares what we genuinely recommend based on different travel styles, so you can choose the place that truly fits your trip, not just the one everyone else recommends.

Should You Stay in Da Nang or Hoi An?

The short answer is: it depends on the kind of trip you want to have. While many travel guides compare Da Nang and Hoi An as if you have to choose one over the other, we don’t think that’s the right question. Instead, ask yourself where you’d enjoy waking up each morning and spending your evenings, because that’s what will shape your overall travel experience.

Da Nang is a better choice if you enjoy variety and convenience. As Vietnam’s third-largest city, it offers beautiful beaches, modern hotels, shopping malls, rooftop bars, diverse restaurants, and excellent transport connections. It’s also one of the easiest places to base yourself if you plan to explore Central Vietnam, with attractions like Ba Na Hills, Hue, My Son Sanctuary, and Hoi An all within easy reach.

If you're visiting Da Nang for the first time, My Khe Beach is one place you shouldn't miss

Hoi An, on the other hand, offers a slower and more peaceful lifestyle. Beyond its famous Ancient Town, you’ll discover quiet rice fields, local villages, beautiful beaches, riverside cafés, and a creative community filled with art galleries, handmade workshops, and independent boutiques. It’s the kind of place where many travelers end up spending hours simply walking, cycling, or enjoying a coffee without any fixed plans.

One thing many first-time visitors don’t realize is that you don’t have to sacrifice one destination for the other. Da Nang and Hoi An are only around 30 minutes apart, making it easy to stay in one place while visiting the other on a day trip or evening outing. That flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of traveling in Central Vietnam.

Da Nang vs Hoi An at a Glance

Although Da Nang and Hoi An are only around 30 minutes apart, they offer two very different travel experiences. Neither is objectively better, the right choice depends on what you’re looking for. Here’s a quick comparison before we dive into each aspect in more detail:

Category Da Nang Hoi An
Atmosphere Modern, vibrant coastal city Peaceful, historic & artistic town
Best For First-time visitors, families, beach lovers Couples, slow travelers, culture lovers
Beaches My Khe Beach, long sandy coastline An Bang & Cua Dai, quieter atmosphere
Accommodation Wide range from budget to luxury resorts Boutique hotels, homestays & villas
Restaurants & Cafés Greater variety & international options More local, boutique & riverside cafés
Nightlife Rooftop bars, beach clubs & lively evenings Lantern-lit streets, cafés & relaxed nightlife
Transportation International airport & easy connections Easy to reach, around 30–45 minutes from Da Nang
Digital Nomads Excellent infrastructure & coworking spaces Relaxed lifestyle, creative community
Day Trips Ideal base for exploring Central Vietnam Best for slower stays with occasional city visits

Our Perspective

If you’re visiting Central Vietnam for the first time, we’d usually recommend staying in Da Nang first & visiting Hoi An as a day trip (or move to Hoi An for few days if you have time). You’ll have more accommodation options, easier transportation, and convenient access to attractions like Hue, Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains, and My Son Sanctuary, all while being close enough to enjoy Hoi An whenever you like.

That said, if your priority is slowing down rather than seeing as much as possible, Hoi An may be exactly what you’re looking for. It’s the kind of place where spending an afternoon cycling through rice fields or discovering a small art gallery can be just as rewarding as visiting a famous attraction.

Atmosphere & Lifestyle: Which One Matches Your Travel Style?

If there’s one factor that shapes your trip more than anything else, it’s the atmosphere you’ll experience every day. While Da Nang and Hoi An are only a short drive apart, they offer completely different lifestyles, and that’s often what travelers remember long after the trip is over.

Choose Da Nang if you enjoy convenience, variety, and an active city lifestyle

Da Nang is a modern coastal city where you can easily switch between beaches, cafés, shopping malls, local markets, rooftop bars, and scenic attractions all in one day. Despite being Vietnam’s third-largest city, it feels noticeably less hectic than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, with cleaner streets, wider roads, and nature always close by.

It’s a great fit if you like having plenty of restaurant choices, modern facilities, and the flexibility to explore different parts of Central Vietnam while staying in one place.

Choose Hoi An if you prefer slowing down and enjoying the journey

Many people think Hoi An is simply the Ancient Town, but that’s only a small part of what makes it special.

Step beyond the historic center and you’ll find quiet rice fields, peaceful villages, riverside cafés, local neighborhoods, and beautiful beaches like An Bang and Cua Dai. The pace of life feels slower, making it easy to spend an afternoon cycling through the countryside, reading at a café, or simply wandering without a plan.

One thing we personally love about Hoi An is its creative atmosphere. It’s full of independent art galleries, handmade craft workshops, tailor studios, pottery classes, meditation spaces, and beautifully designed concept stores. Almost every walk through town leads to a small hidden gem that wasn’t on your itinerary.

Hoi An is surprisingly enjoyable for longer stays

While many visitors only spend a few hours in the Ancient Town, Hoi An is actually one of our favorite places for slow travel.

It’s become increasingly popular with freelancers, remote workers, and digital nomads who appreciate its peaceful environment, welcoming cafés, and slower rhythm of life. Although there are fewer entertainment options than Da Nang, you’ll still find everything you need for a comfortable stay – and if you ever miss the city, Da Nang is only around 30–45 minutes away.

Our Perspective

If you’re the kind of traveler who enjoys seeing as much as possible, you’ll probably feel more comfortable staying in Da Nang. If your idea of a perfect holiday is slowing down, discovering hidden places, and enjoying everyday moments, Hoi An may surprise you even more than its famous Ancient Town.

Accommodation & Location: Where Is It More Convenient to Stay?

When choosing between Da Nang and Hoi An, your accommodation isn’t just where you’ll sleep, it’s the place you’ll return to after every day of exploring. That’s why location can have a much bigger impact on your trip than many travelers expect.

Da Nang offers more variety and convenience

If you like having plenty of options, Da Nang is hard to beat. You’ll find everything from budget hostels and boutique hotels to luxury beachfront resorts and international hotel chains.

The city is also divided into different neighborhoods, each with its own character. My Khe Beach is perfect if you want to stay by the sea, while the Han River area offers easy access to restaurants, cafés, shopping, and nightlife.

For first-time visitors, Da Nang is often the most convenient choice because the airport, beaches, attractions, and day-trip departure points are all within easy reach.

Hoi An is ideal for a quieter, more local stay

Accommodation in Hoi An has a very different feel. Instead of high-rise hotels, you’ll mostly find boutique hotels, garden villas, riverside homestays, and small family-run properties.

Many visitors assume they need to stay inside the Ancient Town, but some of our favorite places are actually just outside the center, where you’ll wake up to rice fields, peaceful villages, or quiet rivers instead of crowds.

You’ll still be only a short bike ride or taxi trip from the Old Town, while enjoying a much more relaxing atmosphere.

Don’t choose based only on famous attractions

One mistake we often see is travelers choosing accommodation simply because it’s closest to a famous landmark.

In our experience, it’s far more important to think about how you want to spend your mornings and evenings.

Would you rather:

  • Walk along the beach at sunrise?
  • Have dozens of restaurants within walking distance?
  • Cycle through rice fields before breakfast?
  • Relax in a quiet garden café after a day of sightseeing?

Those everyday moments often shape your trip far more than the attractions themselves.

Our Perspective

If you’re staying for three to five days and plan to explore several destinations around Central Vietnam, we’d usually recommend Da Nang as your base. It offers more accommodation choices, easier transportation, and greater flexibility for day trips.

If you’re planning a slower holiday, working remotely, or simply want a peaceful place to unwind, Hoi An is a wonderful choice, especially outside the Ancient Town. Many travelers arrive expecting to spend one or two nights there, only to wish they’d stayed longer.

Food, Cafés & Everyday Life: Where Will You Enjoy Spending Your Time?

While attractions often get the most attention, it’s the everyday experiences that usually become the most memorable part of a trip. The café where you spend a slow morning, the local restaurant you accidentally discover, or the evening walk after dinner often stays with you long after you’ve returned home.

Da Nang offers more variety

As a larger city, Da Nang naturally gives you more choices. Whether you’re looking for authentic local food, international restaurants, specialty coffee, rooftop bars, shopping malls, or beach clubs, you’ll find almost everything within a short drive.

If you enjoy trying something different every day, Da Nang offers the greatest flexibility. You could have a bowl of Mi Quang at a local market for breakfast, enjoy Japanese or Korean food for lunch, and finish the day with fresh seafood by the beach.

Hoi An is about quality over quantity

Hoi An has fewer restaurants and cafés than Da Nang, but it offers a completely different atmosphere.

Beyond the Ancient Town, you’ll discover beautiful garden cafés, riverside coffee shops, hidden bakeries, concept stores, and small restaurants tucked away in quiet neighborhoods. Many of them are independently owned, giving each place its own personality rather than feeling like part of a tourist district.

Rather than rushing from one place to another, Hoi An encourages you to slow down and simply enjoy where you are.

Hoi An is full of hidden creative spaces

This is something many travel guides rarely mention.

Beyond the lanterns and historic streets, Hoi An has a thriving creative community. As you wander around town, you’ll come across art galleries, pottery studios, handmade craft workshops, tailoring studios, photography spaces, meditation centers, and beautifully designed lifestyle stores.

One of our favorite ways to spend an afternoon is simply walking without a destination. It’s surprisingly easy to stumble upon a small workshop, an inspiring gallery, or a beautifully curated boutique that wasn’t on any itinerary.

If you enjoy fashion, Hoi An also has several excellent thrift and vintage shops, many carefully curated with unique pieces you won’t easily find elsewhere. They’re a fun alternative to the town’s famous tailor shops and offer a different side of Hoi An’s creative culture.

Eating like a local doesn’t have to be expensive

Many travelers assume tourist destinations are expensive, but both Da Nang and Hoi An still offer excellent value if you know where locals eat.

As a general rule, the further you walk away from the busiest tourist streets, the more authentic, and often more affordable, the food becomes. Local markets, family-run restaurants, and small roadside eateries usually serve some of the best regional dishes at very reasonable prices.

One simple tip we always share is to look for places filled with local customers. If the menu is mostly in Vietnamese and the owner speaks little English, there’s a good chance you’ve found somewhere locals genuinely enjoy.

Of course, it’s still a good idea to check the menu or ask for the price before ordering, especially at seafood restaurants. While overcharging can happen anywhere in the world, people in Central Vietnam are generally known for being friendly, honest, and straightforward, so most travelers have very positive experiences.

Our Perspective

If food, creativity, and discovering hidden places are part of why you love traveling, Hoi An has a way of drawing you in. It’s not a destination where you constantly chase famous attractions – instead, it’s a place where the small moments often become the highlights.

If you enjoy having endless choices, modern conveniences, and something different to do every day, Da Nang will probably suit you better. Neither is the “better” destination. They simply offer two very different ways to experience Central Vietnam.

Transportation & Getting Around: Is One More Convenient Than the Other?

The good news is that both Da Nang and Hoi An are very easy to get around, and traveling between the two is much simpler than many first-time visitors expect.

The journey usually takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic, making it easy to enjoy one destination while staying in the other. Whether you choose Grab, a taxi, a private car, or a shuttle service, transportation is affordable, reliable, and widely available throughout the day.

Getting around Da Nang

Da Nang is a larger city, but it’s also very easy to navigate. Most attractions are connected by wide roads, and Grab, Xanh SM works well throughout the city.

If you’re staying near My Khe Beach or the Han River, you’ll be within a short drive of restaurants, shopping, the airport, and many of the city’s main attractions.

Getting around Hoi An

Hoi An offers a completely different experience.

The Ancient Town is best explored on foot, while the surrounding countryside is perfect for cycling. Many hotels and homestays provide complimentary bicycles, making it easy to reach nearby cafés, rice fields, An Bang Beach, or local villages without needing a car.

If you plan to visit Da Nang for shopping, nightlife, or the airport, the journey is short enough that many travelers make the trip several times during their stay.

You don’t have to choose one and miss the other

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that choosing Da Nang means missing Hoi An, or vice versa.

In reality, the two destinations complement each other perfectly. It’s common for travelers to spend the day relaxing on Da Nang’s beaches before heading to Hoi An in the late afternoon for dinner and the lantern-lit evening atmosphere. Others choose to stay in Hoi An and visit Da Nang for a beach day or to explore Son Tra Peninsula and Marble Mountains.

Our Perspective

We rarely think of Da Nang and Hoi An as competing destinations. Instead, we see them as two different sides of the same journey.

Because they’re so close together, we usually encourage travelers to experience both rather than choosing one over the other. The decision isn’t really about which place to visit, it’s about which place feels more like home during your stay, while knowing the other is always just a short drive away.

Our Honest Recommendation: If It Were Our Trip…

After helping travelers explore Central Vietnam for more than 13 years, we’ve learned that there’s no single “best” place to stay, only the one that best matches your travel style. If this were our trip, here’s what we’d choose:

Choose Da Nang if…

  • It’s your first trip to Central Vietnam.
  • You have 3–5 days and want to see as much as possible.
  • You enjoy beaches, modern hotels, and a wide variety of restaurants.
  • You’re traveling with family or children.
  • You plan to take several day trips to Hue, Ba Na Hills, My Son, or Hoi An.

For most first-time visitors, Da Nang offers the best balance of comfort, convenience, and flexibility.

Choose Hoi An if…

  • You enjoy slow travel more than busy sightseeing.
  • You love art, cafés, boutique hotels, and creative spaces.
  • You’re planning a romantic getaway or a longer stay.
  • You want to cycle through rice fields, discover local workshops, and experience everyday life beyond the tourist attractions.
  • You’re a freelancer, remote worker, or digital nomad looking for a peaceful place to live and work for a while.

Hoi An isn’t just somewhere to visit, it’s somewhere many people unexpectedly fall in love with.

The best option? Experience both.

If your itinerary allows, we honestly don’t think you need to choose between Da Nang and Hoi An. They’re close enough that you can easily enjoy both during the same trip.

A common itinerary we recommend is staying in Da Nang as your main base, then visiting Hoi An for an afternoon and evening, or even spending one or two nights there if you want to experience the town after the day-trippers have left. It gives you the convenience of the city while still letting you enjoy Hoi An’s unique atmosphere at its best.

Our Perspective

If someone asked us to recommend just one place for a first visit to Central Vietnam, we’d usually say Da Nang, not because it’s better than Hoi An, but because it’s easier.

Easier to fly into. Easier to get around. Easier to reach the region’s biggest attractions. And easier to adapt your itinerary if your plans change.

But if you asked us where we’d go to slow down for a few weeks, work remotely, or simply enjoy life’s quieter moments, we’d probably choose Hoi An.

The good news is that you don’t have to pick a winner. One gives you the energy of a modern coastal city, while the other offers the charm of a historic town surrounded by rice fields and rivers. Together, they create one of the most rewarding travel experiences in Vietnam.
